Looking for a way to boost your pet’s nutrition?
Just like their 2-legged caregivers, pets can benefit from the addition of whole, fresh foods into their diets. Here are some superfoods that can really pack in a huge amount of health-boosting nutrients:
Coconut Oil – Organic virgin coconut oil is one of the healthiest fats around. It contains lauric, capric and caprylic acids which optimize thyroid function and fat metabolism and have antibacterial, antifungal and antiviral properties. Give your pet ¼ tsp per 10 pounds twice daily. And don’t forget to save some for yourself for smoothies, stir-frys or a butter alternative in baking!
Berries – Yes! It’s ok to feed your pet strawberries, blueberries and raspberries in small amounts if they like them. These fruits are low in sugar and high in antioxidants and vitamins, especially vitamin C.
Leafy Greens – Shop your local farmer’s market for in-season chard, collard greens, kale, dandelion greens. Lightly sauté in coconut oil (see above) and you have a delicious and nutritious addition to your pets’ diet. Greens are high in vitamins and minerals and can help prevent cancer.
Shitake Mushrooms – These nutritional powerhouses are high in complex carbohydrates called polysaccharides which help to support pets’ immune systems including fighting cancer and viruses. They should be not be fed raw.
Green Tripe – Ok, Ok. I know this is a bit disgusting but for those brave souls that can stomach (pun intended) a bit of raw cow stomach, your pet will thank you for it. Tripe (available canned and raw) is loaded with B vitamins, digestive enzymes and probiotics which support healthy digestion.
Bone Broth – This one requires a bit of effort, but a home-made bone broth is one of the most nutritious foods that you can add to your pet’s diet. It is high in minerals and other micronutrients not to mention delicious and very easy to digest. For a recipe, click here.
